My friend Rob says that when he takes his miniature Dobermans to the dog park they get very little exercise. Everyone, it seems, wants to hold them. They're just so darn cute!

El Amor

Just across the street from Evynne's pre-school is the Cuban coffee shop. Apparently coffee, Cuban coffee anyway, has love potion properties.

Home on Tuesday and back to baby sitting on Wednesday. Given my determination to publish a photo each day I'm lucky to have two such photogenic subjects so readily available.

Here's Lookin' at You

Today we said goodbye to Los Angeles and headed back to Seattle and to a belated birthday party for Nancy at Chris and Jen's. Before we left the hotel I took a farewell photo of the goggle-eyed koi.

Genius
September 24, 2012
Today was another wonderfully busy day. After another breakfast with other new friends we headed east to visit the church my family and I attended when I lived in L.A. It's no longer "First Christian Reformed Church" but rather "Community Church", but it is still, apparently, Christian Reformed so not all is lost. We then visited the Watts Towers and were there amazed at what one person can do. From there we pressed on to the La Brea Tar Pits, but after lunch decided they would have to wait for next time and headed to the Griffith Park observatory and its stunning views of Los Angeles. Next was Olvera Street, just for old times sake, and then back to our room. The photo is a detail of the utterly amazing Watts Towers.

No Place like Home

Today was another busy day. After breakfast with some of our new friends we headed out to the Getty Center. This isn't the original art museum J. Paul Getty built in Malibu. No, this is the new, stunning art museum complex in the hills north of downtown Los Angeles. And it is truly stunning. After that we went to the Wurst Küche in Venice for, well, wurst and then to the canals and the beach. I had never been to the canals in Venice. They are lovely. I had trouble choosing just one photo for today and decided on this little tableau from Venice. We have the gentleman with the large belly and deep tan on the left and the gentleman with the equally large (but covered) belly on the right. He's caressing the hair of a lovely girl young enough to be his daughter or grand daughter (and who knows, perhaps she is) while she holds a cockatoo. Ah, Venice.

Unexpected Pleasures
September 21, 2012
Today we flew to L.A. for my fiftieth high school reunion — the first reunion of any kind I have ever attended and, given I have essentially no memories of people or events, a total exercise in serendipity. We are staying in a very tired Embassy Suites. The high points so far have been a congenial Hispanic bartender and the decorative plants which are, amazingly, real.

The View
September 18, 2012
We can only hope that a spider fortunate enough to have its web right on the ship canal would enjoy all the passing boats. But, I suppose that even a spider is capable of becoming jaded eventually. Besides, there are all those bugs to deal with.

Competition
September 17, 2012
Today was not a day with space for photo making, and I found myself taking my camera to my Spanish class hoping to see something between here and there. Next to Casa Latina is the Japanese Congregational Church, and today's photo is of the reflection competing with decorative backing in the church door windows. I'll not go so far as to call it art, but it got my attention.

Indoor Sunshine

Another day, another party. Today Mel and Mary Butler hosted the Cathedral Choir members and guests at their home for lunch. The food was delicious and the companionship congenial, and the beauty of nature was on full display outdoors and in.
Well Done
September 15, 2012
Today Peter Hallock had the Compline Choir members, current and former, to his home for a luncheon garden party. The guest of honor was Bill Giddings, retiring from the choir after 53 years of faithful service -- a job well done.

Happy Coincidence
September 14, 2012
We ate dinner with Jen and the kids today. Chris is in Asia for two weeks, so bringing dinner seemed helpful. By happy coincidence I got my 50mm f/1.4 lens yesterday. Being with the kids was a good chance to try out my new additional f stop, with today's photo as the result.

Home again

After breakfast it was again time to board the Victoria Clipper for the trip back to Seattle. It was a beautiful day with blessedly calm seas. My photo shows the moment of transition as our ship curves out of the harbor and accelerates to its 30 knot cruising speed.

Yo Ho Ho Off We Go
September 10, 2012
Today, after a wonderful visit with our good friends from Michigan, Larry and Ina Jane, here to visit their kids and grandkids, we left Seattle (again) this time to be with friends George and Nancy in Victoria. We took the Victoria Clipper and, in less than three hours, there we were, slightly seasick but none the worse for wear. It’s really a great way to get from Seattle to Victoria.

Houses
September 9, 2012
Today we visited a friend who is the daughter of friends. In the backyard, along with the trampoline and the swing set is a playhouse for kids and an much smaller house for their feathered friends.

Thank heaven for little girls, not only because they're a reliable source of good photo opportunities but also because they're a reliable source of joy.

Abundance

Today we made the long trek to Carpinito's -- the wonderful flower and food market in Kent. We bought veggies, not flowers, but the flowers were the more photogenic.
First Day of School

Today was Evynne's first day of preschool -- a day worthy of commemoration. Our little girl is growing up.

Optical Detail
September 5, 2012
Today was a travel day, a long travel day with little opportunity for photos. But there was some. Before heading to the airport we went with Sarah to pick up her new glasses. I was taken by the lights on the optical shop and took today's photo.

Simplicity
September 4, 2012
Today was the day we said goodbye to Martha's Vineyard and began our trek home. Tonight we're in Boston in Ben and Sarah's loft. Tomorrow we fly home. The loft is decorated eclectically, idiosyncratically, and wonderfully. Today's photo is a detail.

No man set asunder
September 3, 2012
Travis and Eliza's wedding went off without a hitch as did the reception which followed. Just after the ceremony Travis's father, Ben, unveiled at the site a rock, which had been carved to memorialize the occasion.

Today was the big day when Eliza and Travis would marry. Here Travis's sister, Amy, is making sure everything is just so before walking up the hill to the wedding site.

Sunset Serenity
September 1, 2012
Today was a day of great activity up the hill where the wedding reception will be. Actually, there has been a lot of painting, cleaning, and building for the past several days. It's a bit like an Amish barn raising except these kids are putting on a wedding. After all the activity of the day, picnic fixings were transported to the beach for a barbecue. It was beautiful setting, and everyone seemed to have a good time.
