Today was the Halloween singalong at Evynne's preschool. We were all there including, of course, her younger brother who, for a while at least, was enthusiastically participating. He was, perhaps, sad to see it end.

The Thinker

Each fall, Paul and Peggy host a cider making party and dessert potluck. There's a pickup full of apples to be turned into endless gallons of cider, along with good people, good food and good company. There's also a fire and places to sit to, perhaps, contemplate how very lucky we are it's not raining.

The Seattle Eye
October 27, 2012
Actually, they call it the Seattle Great Wheel. According to its website it's the largest observation wheel on the west coast at 175 feet high. We haven't gone on it yet. Might be awhile.

Like the voracious, extra-terrestrial plant in 'Little Shop of Horrors' Alec has a big appetite and is growing like a weed. No one, but no one, appreciates a good meal like Al, and what's especially great is that, for him, they're all good.

Not Too Scary

I expect even the most timid trick or treaters will feel reassured by these happy ghosts and jack o'lanterns. I certainly did.

Go Fish
October 22, 2012
It's grey and it's rainy and it's cold but, really, with fish like this why would we want to live anywhere but Seattle?

Rain, Rain Go Away

Today was a day of exciting weather with hail and torrential rain alternating with brilliant sun. Winter is muscling its way into our lives.

Outside my window it's dark, cold, and rainy. Winter is definitely coming, but not just yet.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat
October 19, 2012
By happy coincidence, fall is when school is back in session and, simultaneously, far fewer boats are motoring on the ship canal. It's the perfect time for crew to resume their arduous pursuit of perfection.

Good Fellow, Well Met

Thursdays I bring Evynne to pre-school and often then go to the Cuban coffee shop across the street. Today, while there, I had the pleasure of running into my friend Roy and his friend Mark. Instead of studying Spanish as I had intended, I had the fun of talking with them. Mark is of Cuban descent and helped me remember how truly terrible my Spanish still is.

Just a week ago this pile of rubble was our favorite super market. The apartment building, now stripped of its brick facade is soon to follow down the path of obliteration. The future is rushing in.

Grand Occasion
October 13, 2012
Today we installed, at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, our new dean, Steve Thomason. It was a grand occasion, with seven choirs singing. A good time was had by all.

It's a Gas
October 10, 2012
Gas Works Park, strange and wonderful, is set on the north end of Lake Union on the site of the former gasification plant of the Seattle Gas Light Company. Outside are the towers and piping, in ghostly geometric beauty, along with a kite flying hill topped by a huge sun dial sculpture. Inside, the former pump house, its machinery still intact, is now a children's play barn.

Only Stand and Wait
October 9, 2012
Milton was referring to his blindness when he wrote the sonnet that concludes "They also serve who only stand and wait," but the line could also, it seems to me, apply to the trees.

Cruising Down the River
October 8, 2012
Surely this boat must at least be in the running for the "Smallest Tugboat" designation. It's pushing a little barge with pipe and welding equipment, while its operator, in shorts and t-shirt, enjoys this glorious fall day.

Fall

Warm days and cool nights, bright sun and cloudless skies - it can't last, and it won't last. But while it lasts, it's glorious.

R.I.P.
October 5, 2012
Two years ago, on May 18, Loki died. Loki was Peter's cat, but when Peter lived with us Loki, of course, did too, and when Peter moved out for the last time Loki stayed with us. So, Loki was our cat also. The experience of living with Loki (owning is the wrong word) was unlike any experience we've ever had with a pet. Losing him was very difficult for all of us. I wrote a little piece after he died and in it I said "Losing Loki has been strange. We’ve had many pets. We have Lily and Ursula even now. We’ve lost many pets but never, never have I been affected like this. The same is true of Nancy. And of course this has been a terrible loss for Peter. What was it about Loki? Nancy thinks that Loki was one of the angels she’s experienced, sent to all of us for a reason - to help and teach us, to fill a need we didn’t know we had - and that it was time for him to go and in his going teach us one last lesson. That makes sense to me. What is indisputably true is that he was beautiful, magnificent really. Gentle but always, always himself. He was often insistent, loudly so, but would put up with a lot. Words fail me. He was very, very important to us and I miss him so very much."
We buried him in the garden. Later, Nancy and Peter planted a yellow rose bush over him. In the summer there are always lots of beautiful roses, but it's fall now and, like Loki, they're all gone. Rest in peace, Loki.
Odd

I got my hair cut today. The person who cuts my hair is named Chemene and her shop is in the Odd Fellows Building on Capitol Hill. Apparently the Odd Fellows were originally men in villages where there were not enough of any one trade to form a guild. So, they banded together in a society of odd fellows. They weren't really "odd", in the sense of "strange", at all. Be that as it may, the building they built in Seattle, despite "modernization", has always felt odd to me.

My Hero
October 3, 2012
Nancy and I babysit twice a week, but as you might expect the burden of that is not shared equally. Nancy gets there earlier and stays later. She makes all of us lunch and cleans up afterwards. When I arrive around 10:00 a.m. Al is usually down for his nap, and it's just Nancy being with Evynne who is, in turn, always happy.

Nothing says Seattle more than the Space Needle, with Mt. Ranier reigning majestically over all. They are especially lovely in the evening light of our rapidly shortening days.

Two out of two times now, on the day of my Spanish class I've found myself nearing the time to leave with no photo. Oh dear, what to do? As it happens, there are always the cats. Here Ursula is trying to decide whether she needs to yet again, for maybe the millionth time, flee.

Chameleon

Peter's home for a few days. He came specifically to participate yesterday, with people with whom he works, in a "Tough Mudder" contest. In the Tough Mudder the participants go through freezing water, mud, pipes, and assorted other obstacles including wires live with 10,000 volts of electricity. Today he's working on a designing and making a sort of collage t-shirt.
Such an interesting young man.
