Still Crazy (Amazing) After All These Years

February 27, 2013

Today I went to the Central Seattle Public Library.  It's been around in its current incarnation for several years now, but its Rem Koolhaus design, I found, has not lost its power to amaze.

Egg

February 26, 2013

I had decided today would be the first since last July 31 that I didn't take any photos.  Nancy was sick and needed taking care of.  It was all about priorities.  But, after a visit to the doctor she's feeling much better and insisted there must be a photo taken today.  And so, there is.  I think this glowing, blown glass egg is lovely.  It conjures up "2001: A Space Odyssey" sorts of thoughts.   What do you suppose might come from such an egg?

Eagle with Chicks

February 25, 2013

Not so much when I took it, but when looking at it later this photo reminded me of nothing so much as a mother bird with her newborn chicks, some of which haven't quite gotten the hang of standing.  By happy coincidence, the sculpture is named "The Eagle".

Peace

February 24, 2013

This fountain, with its Zen-like tranquility, is in the Waterfall Garden, built on the site of the original UPS office in Pioneer Square.  The entire "Garden", with it's wall of water and rock, is a delightful refuge in a somewhat dodgy part of the city.

The Seagull of Remembrance

February 23, 2013

It should be a dove, of course, a dove of remembrance perched here on the Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Pioneer Square.  But there were no doves in the vicinity, and I felt there was a lovely symmetry between the bird and the monument on which he stood.  So, the seagull of remembrance it is, and in Seattle, city by the sea, that seems entirely appropriate.

Salmon Waves

February 22, 2013

At the fish ladder side of the Hiram M. Chittendon locks is this sculpture by Seattle artist Paul Sorey.  It is meant to evoke the importance to us of water and of salmon and to celebrate the improvements made to the locks to enhance the survival of salmon making their way to the sea and back again.  At night, apparently, blue LEDs create images of salmon traversing the locks.  I need to go back at night.

Scary!

February 21, 2013

This fearsome dragon lives in a tree in the front yard of his creator, Dan Reeder, who turns out to be not only very talented but a very nice guy.  Here's the link to his site: http://www.gourmetpapermache.com.  For a good time, watch some of the videos, especially the "Newest Project" one.

I couldn't resist one more photo from the other direction.  I'm sure the birds living in this bird house are deeply grateful the dragon is eternally looking the other way.

Koi Revisited

February 20, 2012

Some time back I published a photo of koi.  Today I found myself back where they live and took a few more photos of them.  They are beautiful.

Like Love and Marriage

February 19, 2013

Churches and colored windows just go together.  Even the old Fort Lawton chapel, standing in faded dignity on Magnolia Bluff, has one.  I found it striking, glowing like a jewel in the light of the setting sun.

Rest in Peace

February 18, 2013

Mt. Pleasant Cemetery is lovely.  It evokes, for me, the third act of "Our Town" in which the townspeople who have died rest for all eternity in the company of each other, separated from those they knew in life until those too die and join the ever swelling ranks of the dead.

Winter Color

February 17, 2013

If you just keep your eyes open, winter if filled with wonderful little surprises.

The Locks

February 17, 2013

Like yesterday today was sunny, at least part of the time.  But today, unlike yesterday, that was a good thing.

What a Difference a Day Makes

February 15, 2013

Actually, in this case it was more like three or four days.  In any event today, having very little time to take a photo and being in the neighborhood of Green Lake, I attempted to reproduce a photo I had taken a few days ago of a composition I liked -- specifically, a trash can and a dock.  Unfortunately, not only did I forget the perspective I had used before, but today was the only sunny day this month and the sun was very much in the wrong place.  What I ended up with, after much digital manipulation and gnashing of teeth, is this:

but what I was looking for was this:

And so it goes.

Useful Beauty

February 14, 2013

The rose window, on the west wall of St. Mark's and at the front of the church, is not everyone's favorite piece of architecture.  But to my mind it works and has the added advantage of making sunglasses no longer necessary for late afternoon services.

Learning the Basics

February 13, 2013

Hopefully it's a good sign that "Potty Time with Elmo" is one of Alec's favorite books.

Trees

February 12, 2013

I find myself drawn to trees.

Grow Dammit!

February 11, 2013

In this little garden, the only plants clearly taking the sign seriously are the highly invasive, infinitely obnoxious blueberry vines twining all around it.  Might be time for a different sign.

Thank you

February 10, 2013

I am so very thankful for people who not only think "Wow, wouldn't it be cool to have glowing, orange balls in that tree out front", but then actually go out and do it.

Streetscape

February 9, 2013

One of the charming aspects of our part of Seattle is the fact that streets become stairways, or ridged paths, and vice-versa.  Today's photo, for example, is of Jesse Ave. W.

Crew

February 8, 2013

Today's photo inspired me to do a bit of reading about UW rowing.  According to Wikipedia, rowing at the University of Washington dates back to 1901.  It is the most successful athletic program of any type at any university anywhere in the world having won twenty six national titles.  In 1936, men's crew were undefeated national champions, world champions, and won gold at the olympic games in Germany.  In 2012 the men won every event at the national championships.  Go Dawgs!

Sexy

February 6, 2013

I haven't much to say about this photo.  I just liked the curves.

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Why?

February 5, 2013

In my imagination this poor desecrated tree reminds me of the Nike of Samothrace, or Winged Victory, statue in the Louvre only in this case, of course, lacking not only her arms and head but also her wings. In any case, I have to wonder why this little bit was left as testimony to what once was.

Mystery

February 5, 2013

There's a story here, I'm quite sure, but I have no idea what it is.

Optimism

February 4, 2013

It's only February, so our days are still, in general, short, cold, grey, and wet.  None-the-less, like puppies, these chairs sit in front of our neighbors' house, all perky and indomitably optimistic.

Respite

February 2, 2013

Today we're back to typical, monotonous grey.  On days like this I especially appreciate the touches of color thoughtfully and artfully placed by my wonderful wife to provide a bit of relief from winter's tedious monochrome.

He Ain't Heavy . . . .

February 1, 2013

For all I know the forked piece of wood, covered with moss and lichen, was cut from the very tree it supports.  In my imagination, it does so without complaint.
