I found myself in the vicinity of Denny Park today and thought I might see what I could find there. What I found was this little tableau, thoughtfully placed by I know not whom for reasons I cannot guess.

Somewhere in Time
April 29, 2013
Escalante was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1870's. The People's Exchange co-op was built around 1901 on what was then Main Street. Even now, Escalante is small, dusty, and quiet. It evokes speculation on what drove people to penetrate this harsh and unforgiving land to settle, raise families, and build a town.
It Just Gets Better!

Today we drove east from Boulder, UT on the Burr Trail Road to access Capitol Reef National Park by the southern route. On the way we explored this exquisite slot canyon. It was the high point of our day and perhaps of the trip, intimately beautiful and mysterious.

Dead End
April 27, 2013
Back on April 19 my photo was of a living tree growing from a dead one. It's a common thing in the forests of the fecund Pacific Northwest. But this is a different and a harsher place. Here, apparently, dead wood is just that.
Beautiful Bryce
April 27, 2013
Today we "did" Bryce Canyon National Park, seeing as much as we could in one day. We walked down to the canyon floor and huffed and puffed our way back out again. Such a spectacular place! And in the evening, it simply gets better. Here's the Natural Bridge which is, we learned, actually an arch.

On the way to Bryce Canyon National Park from Zion National Park's east entrance is Red Canyon. You can't miss it, really. And you shouldn't.

LIke, Awesome!
April 24, 2013
Today was our day to see Zion National Park. It was, predictably, awesome — a majestic, toweringly beautiful place.
Under the Eaves
April 23, 2013
Today we set off for the wilds of southern Utah to meet our friends, Ron and Pat. They're on a road trip from Grand Rapids, MI, and we will be with them visiting the National Parks in southern Utah. Today we flew to Las Vegas then drove to Zion National Park. Actually, we drove to Springdale, UT at the southern edge of the park, there being no room in the inn actually in the park. No matter, Springdale is close enough, and our B&B, Under the Eaves, is downright charming.

Alec loves to play the piano. No tunes as yet, but neither does he just bang away. Here he poses for a post performance portrait.

Ken Peterson has sung in the Compline choir for many, many years. For the past few years he has been writing a book on Compline and, wonderfully, it is about to be published. So tonight, before rehearsal, I took this photo of him for his book.

Hidden Treasure
April 20, 2013
While walking along the ship canal I discovered these flowers, half hidden in a cozy grotto of leaves, just waiting to be discovered.

Circle of Life
April 19, 2013
Black and sinuous, tree roots curl around and into the stump of the mighty tree which once stood here and now gives life to the fir standing astride it. Out of death comes life.

In Memoriam
April 18, 2013
These strange rings, containing habitat for birds and bats, are part of a sculpture titled "Quarry Rings". It commemorates the fact that this area, now surrounded by condos, was once a working quarry. The little park in which they reside is titled "Thomas C. Wales Park" in memory of the Assistant U.S. Attorney murdered in his home in our neighborhood in 2001.

Hey, Good Lookin'!
April 17, 2013
It may well be these are two different species of gull and not male and female of the same. Of course, this being Seattle in the 21st century it may not matter. In my imagination, at any rate, the white gull is looking at the brown gull and thinking she's the finest specimen of bird he's seen in quite some time.

Can You Hear Me Now?
April 16, 2013
Apparently, for some people at least, the combination of a tree and a knife is an irresistible one. I wonder what they all felt was so important to say, and whether they really thought anyone coming after them would be able to read their message.

Go to the Light!
April 15, 2013
The MV Puyallup, one of the largest in the Washington State Ferry System, isn't actually carrying us to the next stage of existence but merely to Edmonds. However, over the years at least two people have disappeared from the vessel, never to be seen again. Hopefully they found a welcoming light at the end of their curtailed ferry ride.
Twin Peaks
April 14 2013
The television cult hit series "Twin Peaks" was shot in and around Snoqualmie, WA. Snoqualmie Falls is seen in the opening credits and so became very familiar to those of us who watched the series. Today was a beautiful day, and the falls, swollen by rain and melting snow, were magnificent.

Spring Surprise
April 13, 2013
In this part of the world, severe weather usually means steady rain rather than drizzle. Well, the wind blows pretty hard sometimes, but we don't get thunderstorms. Hardly ever. Today was the exception, with real thunder and hail, bringing a little excitement to the day.

Whoa!
April 12, 2013
Today was cold and rainy. It was good to be inside by the carousel on the waterfront. It was fun seeing the children of all ages, the young with their parents, enjoying the ride, music and lights. But the more I looked at the horses the more strange they became until, finally, they seemed to me something from a Stephen King story.

This owl stands by the float Seattle Pacific University crew use to launch their shells. It presumably was put there in an effort to deter the omnipresent geese from leaving their droppings on the float.
It hasn't worked.

Boys Will Be Boys
April 10, 2013
Michael Kenna is my primary source of photographic inspiration. In the narrative to a retrospective of his work which I visited a couple of weeks ago, he spoke of his love of trees and his lament that, in his mind at least, boys don't climb trees like they used to when he was a boy. With all that in mind, I dedicate this photo to him.

Any Port in a Storm
April 9, 2013
The title of today's post is metaphorical, obviously, and refers to the fact that, to mix my metaphors, today was a photographic desert, with only this photo of Shilshole Marina at sunset to relieve the drought. Thank goodness for cellphones and for observant wives. Thanks, Nancy!

I spent much of today in the emergency department of Swedish Hospital, Issaquah. In the waiting room is a fish tank, and in that tank is this fish along with several others. They really are a wonder, a bit of nature's beauty indoors and accessible. They are all give and no take.

Over the River and Through the Woods
April 7, 2013
The Preston-Snoqualmie Trail doesn't actually go over the river, but follows it through the woods to a view of Snoqualmie Falls.

Scare Thing
April 6, 2013
Judging by the ears, this is a rabbit. Given it's in a garden it is, I suppose, a scare-rabbit. I found it in the Cascade P-Patch, an oasis of growing things next to a lovely little playground and park about a mile from the heart of downtown Seattle. All over Seattle one can find these small, community gardens, 76 in all, tucked into urban nooks and crannies, helping to make Seattle special.

Fight or Flight
April 5, 2013
There was really no time today to go out for photos, so I'm falling back on that old stand-by, the animal picture. Here's Lily, in her favorite spot in front of the fire. Knowing Lily, I imagine she's idly trying to decide whether to attack or simply walk away.

While Strolling Through the Park One Day
April 3, 2013
We have figured out that if it's a nice day getting the kids out of the house makes everything better for everyone. Today was another nice day, so off to Seattle Center we went for lunch at the Armory and a couple of hours for the kids to just wander and explore to their hearts content.

Reach for the Sky
April 2, 2013
The Great Northern Railway, running from St. Paul to Seattle, was completed on July 6, 1893 to the general joy of Seattle residents who had been intensely annoyed twenty years earlier when Tacoma was chosen as the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway. In 1913, in response to the proposed construction of the Ballard Locks, the tracks running north from Interbay were relocated, and this bascule bridge, Bridge #4, with its massive 550 ton concrete counterweight, was built.

April Flowers
April 1, 2013
The old saying has it that "April showers bring May flowers", but here it is, April 1, and the flowers are everywhere. No fooling.

Easter!
March 31, 2013
Today was Easter Sunday. It was as fine an Easter Day as anyone could remember. The Cathedral was decorated in its Easter finery, and lots of folks showed up for the two morning services. This evening, like every Sunday evening, we sang Compline, and after Compline I took this photo showing the festive banners in the now quiet church.
