Escalante was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1870's. The People's Exchange co-op was built around 1901 on what was then Main Street. Even now, Escalante is small, dusty, and quiet. It evokes speculation on what drove people to penetrate this harsh and unforgiving land to settle, raise families, and build a town.
