I Think That I Shall Never See . . .

May 31, 2013

We visited a former neighbor today.  She now lives on Camano Island, on a ten acre lot with many lovely old trees.  In addition to the living trees, huge stumps attest to the giants which once stood here.

Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot

May 30, 2013

Today was Evynne's last day of pre-school.  Mom and Dad couldn't make it, but Nancy, Alec, and I were there for the last day sing-along.  And a good time was had by all!

Shopping

May 29, 2013

We've found that taking the kids somewhere on babysitting days is a good idea, fun for all.  Today getting out meant going all the way to Carpinito's for the one dollar a pound rhubarb.  Evynne and Alec were happy to help pick things out and generally be active.  I did find that if they are both standing on the front of the shopping cart letting go of the handle is a bad idea.

Ivar Feeding the Gulls

May 28, 2013

Ivar Haglund, showman, restauranteur, folk singer, and Seattle legend, opened his first restaurant, Ivar's Acres of Clams, on this very spot in July, 1946.  The statue shows him feeding french fries to the gulls, something he apparently loved to do.  Judging by the size of these gulls, they've been eating very well.

The Edmond-Kingston Ferry

May 27, 2013

Today was Memorial Day.  We celebrated by spending the day with good friends in Kingston.  It rained most of the day, but as we got back to our car the sun made a brief appearance.

Our Lady

May 26 2013

Built in 1910, St. Margaret's of Scotland is the oldest church on Queen Anne Hill.  It's still the original little church, although in 1917 it was moved a block south to where it still stands.  Over the years St. Margaret's school was built next door and, ultimately, torn down to be replaced by a lovely little park.  In 1992 St. Margaret's became the home church of Seattle's Polish community.  The website's in Polish, and there's a fine statue of Pope John Paul II as well as a sculpture commemorating the Katyn massacre.  There are gorgeous flowers and a grotto containing a statue of the Blessed Virgin and six stained glass windows.  And that brings us to today's photo.  More will have to wait for another day.

Location, Location, Location

May 25, 2013

For today I thought it might be fun to show you the house next door.   To do it justice I'm going to break my one photo rule and show you a couple.  When we moved to Seattle the house was rented by someone who cared about it.  Now it's rented to the brother and son of the owner and no one cares about it.

From the overgrown front yard and the dead flowers in rotting flower boxes,

to the less-than-inviting side porch with it's decorative glass balls held up by beer cans,

we need only to peek out through our normally closed venetian blinds to be reassured that no, we're not in Kansas, or in our case East Grand Rapids, anymore.

And that's a good thing.

Reminder

May 24, 2013

I visited my friend Peter today and, as I was leaving, took this photo.  I thought it not only a lovely composition but also a mute reminder of a time when Peter was able to do more.

Sign of the Times

May 23, 2013

Alec's not yet two years old and is already very fond of the iPad.  He's pretty good at it too, depending on what he's doing.  It's a sign of our times, Alec using his iPad with one hand while holding his sippy cup with the other.

So What!

May 22, 2013

Al shares not only his father's big, blue eyes but his appetite as well.  He seems almost a bit defiant over the fact that he just finished eating four pieces of pizza.

Bon Voyage

May 21, 2013

Seattle, over the past several years, has greatly expanded its cruise ship business.  The expansion included a new terminal in Smith Cove near where we live.  In today's photo the Carnival Miracle is departing, under ominous skies, from that terminal for a seven day cruise to Alaska.  Perhaps the weather will be better there.

Memories

May 20, 2013

In the first few years after we moved to Seattle I did many things in an effort to figure out who I was, now that I wasn't an ophthalmologist anymore.  One of the things I did was being a hospice volunteer, and of all the patients I had, the most memorable was Charlie.  Hospice is supposed to be for six months, max, but Charlie and I went on for more like two years before he died.  He and his wife and we became friends.  Today we had lunch with her, along with her sister and her husband and had a very good time.  Good people, good memories.

Oh Deer!

May 19, 2013

I don't believe we've ever visited my sister in Ashland and not seen deer in the neighborhood.   These are in the lot next door. They're happily eating grass at the moment but, really, pretty much anything people decide to grow in their yards will do just as well.

Nick

May 18, 2013

All my baby sister's family are pretty good looking folk.  This is Nick, one of Kristen's two older brothers and as good a big brother as a girl could ask for.

Jerry

May 18, 2013

Today we drove the eight hours south to Ashland so as to be able to attend my niece Kristin's dance recital tomorrow night.  An unexpected benefit was getting the opportunity to spend time with brother-in-law Jerry, as Deb went off with Kristin to help with tonight's performance,  Jerry was kind enough to allow me to photograph him as we talked.

Is That All There Is?

May 16, 2013

Despite predictions of rain and cold the weather today was, again, glorious summer.  Nancy celebrated that fact by bringing sherbet push-ups for lunch desert.  Evynne ate hers in a flash while Alec mostly meandered about giving his an occasional lick while it slowly dripped away.  Evynne couldn't stand it.  Finally, Nancy organized the demise of Alec's sherbet, and let Evynne have a few precious bites as part of the process.  She was hoping for more to the very end.

Sinuous Beauty

May 15, 2013

The pedestrian bridge between Amgen and 15th Ave. was completed in 2004 at a cost of $10,000,000 and received the "Outstanding Projects" award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Association that same year.  It not only safely conducts workers, traveling by bus, over eleven railroad tracks but also, with it's vaguely double helix shape, emphatically proclaims what Amgen is all about.

Here's a web photo to give you the big picture:

Multi-tasking

May 14, 2013

Previously, I posted a photo which illustrated the fact that Seattle streets sometimes become steps, especially in hilly areas like ours. Well, in addition to becoming steps they sometimes become water, as in today's photo which also illustrates what must be some sort of upper limit as to how many signs can be placed on one pole.

Watch Your Step!

May 13, 2013

Apparently no matter what species you are sometimes the kids just get to you.

These goslings were part of a group of about 30 -- a dismaying sight considering they can live for 20 years and produce two pounds of goose poop per day per goose.  Perhaps, before climate change does us in, we'll all be buried under a mountain of goose poop.

Mother's Day

May 12, 2013

Evynne, looking very grown up with her special Mother's Day green nail polish, is very excited to help her mom open her Mother's Day gift.  To my unbiased, grandfatherly eye she has definite modeling potential.

I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles

May 11, 2013

Today, after a wonderful soccer game (we won, 4-0), we went to a party put on and attended by friends of Chris and Jen.  We know and love them all.  They, in turn, all have children whom we love as well.  For their part, the children loved the bubble machine which did a truly amazing job of blowing bubbles.

Hammering Man

May 10, 2013

Our "Hammering Man", celebrating the worker in all of us since 1992, is one of many around the world.  You can see his number, 3277164, on his leg.  Fittingly, I suppose, he rests not only at night but on Labor Day.

My Town

Just coming home from choir rehearsal on a warm Thursday evening -- my town.

Perspective

May 8, 2013

The fountain at Harbor Steps in downtown Seattle is interesting enough, I suppose.  But for me at least it gets a lot more interesting with a little adjustment in point of view.

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Ahhhhh!

May 7, 2013

There's nothing quite like a tall, cool drink on a warm summer evening.

Monday, May 6, 2013

It's a Bird, it's a Plane, it's . . . a Kite!

May 6, 2013

Here in Seattle it is, suddenly and without warning, full summer!

Sacred Fire

May 5, 2013

The Chapel of St. Ignatius, at Seattle University, is an architectural gem.  It's guiding principle, according to architect Steven Holl, was "A Gathering of Different Lights".

Fire!

May 4, 2013

Today, as so often happens, when on my way to one thing I came across another.  In this case, it was police blocking the route I wished to take.  Upon further exploration it turned out there had been a fire on the Union Lake waterfront, in a building behind other buildings, not accessible from the street.  I chatted with an employee who said he didn't know how it started, but he had seen smoke and called 911.  He also said he didn't really know what all had burned, but they had some pretty interesting chemicals back in there.

Everybody Hurts

May 3, 2013

It's hard to read because of the shadows, but it says "Everybody hurts".

Boy with Apple

May 2, 2013

Both Alec and his sister wanted an apple and both were adamant that it not be sliced.  Apparently an aversion to pits and other core-ish sorts of things comes later.

FFA, Here We Come

May 1, 2013

Swanson's Nursery (growing greater Seattle gardeners since 1924) is not only our favorite nursery but also a good place to bring the grandkids.  In the winter they have a camel and some reindeer.  In the spring, chicks.  Al was unfamiliar with the breeds currently on display and was grateful for the chance to learn about them.
