In the first few years after we moved to Seattle I did many things in an effort to figure out who I was, now that I wasn't an ophthalmologist anymore. One of the things I did was being a hospice volunteer, and of all the patients I had, the most memorable was Charlie. Hospice is supposed to be for six months, max, but Charlie and I went on for more like two years before he died. He and his wife and we became friends. Today we had lunch with her, along with her sister and her husband and had a very good time. Good people, good memories.
